LEADERS of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Youth Wing, in Enugu South Local Government area of Enugu East Senatorial districts in Enugu State have unambiguously declared that the party’s 2023 governorship seat belongs to Enugu East Senatorial district, but maintained that the political leaders and stakeholders in their region should put their house in order and do the battle, since there seems to be a bull in the chinaware.
The group which comprises of different youth leaders in the local government raised the red flag some weeks ago when it appeared that some politicians from Enugu West Senatorial District are up in arms against the party’s unwritten (but conscience and equity backed) contract that the three senatorial districts shall take turns in producing governors in the state by making comments in the media and making some inglorious physical and sinister moves suggesting Senator Ike Ekweremadu as their Governorship candidate for 2023.
However, some highly resourceful and powerful party stalwarts from Enugu East Senatorial district who are looking forward to continuing from where the incumbent governor, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi will stop in 2023 are getting not only affirmed by the party supporters who have always shown strong support for the rotation agreement and to stand by any candidate from the zone for the position.
Mr. Emeka Ugwu who is the spokesman for the group in a press conference in Enugu, said, “We have said it before that the rotation will be the turn of Enugu East Senatorial Zone, and nobody can stop it. We got approaches from some inconsequential people in Enugu West Senatorial zone when we first issued a press statement to affirm this, and we warned that nobody should attempt break the zoning arrangement. If PDP Enugu State wants to retain the lion Building beyond 2023, the needful needs to be done. And that entails having our candidate from Enugu East zone for the elections and that is not negotiable”
Speaking on how the PDP rotational agreement has helped in bringing about peace and quenching troublesome agitations in the state, Mr. Ugwu stated “it is insensitive for any troublesome and scornful politician in Enugu state to fathom the disruption of the existing zone arrangement which has become the envy of other states in Nigeria”. Continuing, he said “can you imagine that in the last Anambra elections, all the major political parties in Anambra ensured that their candidates came from Anambra South, to bring about the principle of rotation to their state, just as Enugu has always been – the envy of every other state? Now how can we ever allow one greedy trouble maker change our treasured precious jewel ‘rotation’, God forbid it, if angered we will gather and tie rope to his cow reminiscence nose and drag and drown him in any of the Mpu swamps”
He also warns the youths of Enugu West zone to call their greedy Senator to order. Noting that should they keep quiet at this critical time, and Ike Ekweremadu runs this election and fails, and he is surely going to fail, Enugu West zone should never think of their right in the rotation in the year 2031 when it is expected to be their turn. Because their silence at this period would ultimately mean that they have opted out of the zoning arrangement. Though, we are painstakingly noting down names of those who are openly speaking out against this annoying move for posterity.
He reiterated that “Once Gburugburu finishes, the zoning system will take governorship back to Enugu East zone. We all, as integral members of this party, have an understanding that the governorship of the state will rotate among the three senatorial districts and that’s how it will be.
He wondered why any right thinking Igbo politician, especially someone who has been exposed to the national level like Ike Ekweremadu, would not be promoting zoning, knowing full well that only by zoning would an Igbo and other minority groups ever rule Nigeria to feel that sense of belonging and equity in our country.
The Group encouraged all political stakeholders and leaders in the state to uphold the zoning system as an assured way to guarantee peace and continued success of PDP in elections in Enugu state.
