The Nigerian High Commissioner to the Republic of Zambia, Amb. Nwannebuike Ominyi has condemned in strong terms, the unwarranted attack and molestation meted against Ebonyi women who converged for their annual August meeting in Abakaliki. The attack which was allegedly carried out by the men of Ebube Agu Security outfit, reportedly, saw most of the women wounded heavily while running for their lives as guns were shot sporadically at People’s Club premises,(venue of the meeting).
Amb. Nwanne described the attack as barbaric, which is not only condemnable but capable of worsening the bitter experience of Ebonyi people in the hands of government agents.
“It is regrettable because the duty of government is to protect lives and properties of her citizens and not to destroy them. “Therefore where government agents allegedly turns the guns they ought to use to protect unarmed defenceless women is now used to terrorise them becomes not only unfortunate but calls for serious concern”.
He expressed worries that while other states of the federation are fast in tune with global innovations, Ebonyi has remained desolate in terms investment and ease of doing business.
He called on the state government and relevant security agencies, especially the Inspector General of Police, DSS to launch a full scale Investigation into that ugly incidence with the aim of bringing the culprits to book.
He lamented that it is the fear of abuse of this nature , that warranted the hesitation of the Federal government of Nigeria to approve state security outfits, whereas “it is my candid opinion that state should compliments efforts of the Federal government in curbing insecurity in our country of which this outfit is meant to serve.
“I call on the authority of the state to step up control of the personels it engaged before the activities gets out of hand.”
The Ambassador further appealed to the Ebonyi women to remain calm and law abiding as relevant agencies are being called upon to take necessary action.
