Although nearing completion and promising considerable community benefits, the project has faced controversy. While some local elites criticize the handling of certain incidents, others see it as a step forward in development.
The project scope includes a flyover bridge reconstruction for enhanced traffic safety, a flexible bituminous highway suited to the local climate, asphalt resurfacing for smoother commutes, sewage rerouting to prevent flooding, and soundwalls to reduce noise. Despite the promising upgrades, tensions arose following an April 24 accident in which two local workers tragically lost their lives. This incident prompted community unrest, a temporary site closure, and a lawsuit. Although the company reached a settlement, details remain undisclosed, and community members continue to seek accountability.
The accident has spurred allegations from grieving families, who accuse OURLEGACY CONSTRUCTION of settling with authorities under lenient terms and failing to provide adequate support for the victims’ families. The claims underscore the complexities foreign firms often face in navigating local communities, particularly when incidents involve loss of life.
Following a six-month pause, construction resumed on October 15, but local tensions persist, with an extremist group questioning the settlement distribution and stirring unrest. While some elites view the foreign company’s efforts as a genuine attempt to improve Gaziantep’s infrastructure, others remain skeptical.
OURLEGACY CONSTRUCTION’s commitment to the project amid these challenges speaks to its intent to bring lasting benefits to the community through improved transport, flood control, and public safety. However, local leaders have advised the company to take additional security measures to ensure the safety of its international staff and workers, particularly given the extremist group’s opposition.
