The Macallan Partners with Alexis Galleries to Launch ‘The Art Residency Initiative’

The Macallan in collaboration with Alexis Galleries launched the inaugural edition of The Art Residency Initiative; a program designed to celebrate Nigerian art and spotlight environmental sustainability. The initiative, held from October 1-31, marked The Macallan’s first partnership with Alexis Galleries, showcasing their commitment to supporting sustainable art practices and fostering environmental consciousness within Nigeria’s dynamic creative community.

This inaugural edition of The Art Residency Initiative showcased four renowned Nigerian artists: Francis Denedo, Olushola Olajobi, Yusuf Rilwan, and Eugene Koboye, each contributing a distinct artistic perspective on sustainability through the use of recycled materials. Francis Denedo is a sculptor who specialises in using sculptural metals to explore both contemporary and historical themes, creating powerful narratives that connect the past with the present. His art encourages audiences to reflect on societal issues, highlighting the role of art as a medium for social commentary. Similarly, Olushola Olajobi, an environmental artist, incorporates nylon waste into his works to create striking visual narratives about climate change, consumerism, and the complexities of human consumption. Yusuf Rilwan contributes by using glass and broken tiles to express deep, introspective emotions, adding a personal and contemplative dimension to his creations.  Eugene Koboye focuses on rubber as a medium for portraits, transforming ordinary materials into sophisticated representations that emphasize the expressive potential of reused elements.

Through this collaboration, The Macallan has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability and artistic expression, aligning its brand values with initiatives that support environmental awareness in the art world. The Art Residency Initiative not only exemplified the role of creativity in addressing ecological concerns but also highlighted the richness and diversity of Nigerian art.
