However, the transition from pharmacy to ministry was far from smooth.
“It wasn’t rosy initially,” the bishop candidly acknowledged. It got to a point I was putting everything I had into the young ministry. Then it got to a point in life when I could not afford even cooking gas. My wife started cooking with firewood in this same Lagos because I couldn’t afford gas. Another stage came when I started using Okada (motor bikes) because I couldn’t afford to service and fix my car back then’.
Recounting more challenges he faced, Bishop Chris Kwakpovwe revealed the stark reality of his initial years in full time ministry. “For the first 3 years in my house, we couldn’t afford to put curtains and doors in some rooms, so we used to kill snakes all the time.” Financial constraints led to the difficult decision of sending his children back to the village to complete their primary/secondary education due to the inability to pay their Lagos school fees.
“For some years I couldn’t buy new trousers, I had only one till it got burnt while I was ironing it,” the bishop confessed.
